I originally intended for this to be an album of ghost stories. It soon turned into a story about my identity as a trans woman and my relationship to religion.

In many ways, it still is a ghost story. It's a story about how I am haunted by what everyone said, and how everyone acted around me as I came out and transitioned. Every time someone asked: "Are you sure you want to be a woman?" or said: "You won't be attractive," I remembered it. I still feel that pain weighting down on me. I lost sleep some nights thinking about who I used to be, and if this is all worth it.

But I love being trans, and I love being a woman. I am not broken, I am not a freak, I am Nova.

Funeral for a Living Woman is an experimental look into who I truly am. You may find that many of the songs are disjointed, and change rather quickly. They have different moving complex parts. You may think: "This album doesn't know what it wants to be," and you'd be right. Because for so long I didn't know what I wanted to be, and this album is reflective of that.

Sometimes I say that I don't care about what other people think of my music. This isn't true, I care deeply. I care about what people say about me and how people react to my art. But this time, I really want to say I don't care. I want to say that I'm putting this out here and damn anyone who has anything negative to say about this album or me. But in the end, I care immensely.
